Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 2 July 17  Presidential counter attack
The Indian ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s focus on their candidate for president in the forthcoming election this month and the support from the parties was encouraging (‘Kovind files nomination for presidential vote’, Gulf News, June 24). In a counter attack, the other opposition parties under the Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, projecting Meira Kumar as the presidential candidate and the Communist party projecting Prakash Ambedkar, who is the grandson of the late Indian jurist, B. R. Ambedkar, is the latest development in Indian politics. The most salient feature of the three candidates is that they all are Dalit, which is very important. The opposition parties playing their cards, claiming that Ram Nath Kovind, even though he is from the Dalit community his association with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and policies may not be secular. Which candidate will occupy the president’s position? We will have to wait and see.
